Kismet Dallas - TOMORROW! July 25th

In this economic climate it is difficult for everyone to make ends meet... this is just as true for not-for-profit groups.

To help Kismet continue to provide our open stage that does not charge dancers to perform, we have two fundraisers at the July 25th event: we are selling flowers for $3 each so that you can buy a flower to give to a dancer to show your appreciation, and we are also having a 50/50 raffle.

In addition to our normal raffle, we will make available Raffle Tumbler Img50/50 raffle tickets that anyone can buy for $1 each. At the end of the night, we will draw for the winner of the raffles and the winner of the 50/50 raffle gets half of the money raised by the sale of the 50/50 raffle tickets. The more tickets bought, the bigger the pot!
Help us continue to provide this wonderful stage for the Dallas area! It is going to be an amazing night. See you there!

Arabic song translation services

I have a friend who is trying to make a little extra money right now and would like to offer their translation services to bellydancers and musicians in the community. They have done work for myself and for Wind and Fingers already with great results.

This person is a native of the Middle East and fluent in Arabic (various dialects) and English.

They can do line by line translation and provide some info about the background of the songs or history if necessary - what it means, the feeling of the song, etc....
Cost is $40-$50 depending on song length. I have seen other offers at the same price or higher in other parts of the country.

This has been a great help to me in understanding some of my favorites and also to prepare songs for competition in front of Arabic judges.

You can provide a youtube link or send a song via email. Payment can be via Paypal or cash.

Great News!
First: In cased you missed it: one of the co-founders of Kismet was on the radio a couple of weeks ago. Jessica Dawn spoke about Kismet and ME Dance with Kim Harris on her show, Dialogues with Kim. Sobering News
Kismet Dallas has cut back their events for the end of 2009 and 2010 season. Many of us are feeling the financial pinch of the times and can't afford frequent nights out, so we are shooting for the "less is more" in 2010. Our last show in Dallas will be September and our last show in Fort Worth will be the annual Oct. event.

Kismet Board

The Kismet board has taken a hit this summer. Due to time constraints, Catherine, our wonderful treasurer has resigned her position. Our talented Secretary, Mel, has also resigned.

We are looking to the ME community for help, the last time we had an open position- we had two (2) applicants. This was a blow to us as we feel that what Kismet offers is worth supporting.

Kismet had started out as a 5 person project, after many years and many changes we are now working on becoming a *community* project. It can no longer be supported by just a small group of people. Kismet is there to be of service to the ME community, by providing a warm, welcoming stage where *anyone* can perform for free. We are hoping that the community will return the favor and in turn offer it's support through time served on the board and time volunteered at the events themselves.

If not, the opportunity will not exist, and 2009 may well be the last year of Kismet Stage Events. (sounds very overly dramatic perhaps, however- it's the bald truth of the matter)

So vote with your feet, as the saying goes and let us know by your support if Kismet is important to you and/or your students. For a job description of either of the open positions on the board, please email: Kismet@kismetdance.org

Costumes, etc FOR SALE

As some of you may be aware, I've hung up my zills, "retired" as it were, from my belly dance hobby in preparation for the arrival of a new horse project. So, everything is for sale - dozens of CDs, costumes, props, even a VERY tame snake. Costumes are size 8/10, with bras fitting C-D cups. Music CDs are mostly traditional, but there a few Arabic pop as well as tribal selections.

Everything will be on display at the NTMEDA Garage Sale in Grapevine on the 21st of June at very attractive prices. If you have any questions or want more information/photos, I will be happy to send you what I can in advance.

It's going to be a super show and a stupendous way to start the summer!

Join us this Saturday, May 23, for our Memorial Weekend Event, featuring our beautiful and varied dancers, our featured guest troupe RAKSZ, the NTMEDA Night Out, concessions by the Johara Dance Ensemble and a variety of vendors!

Review of Drum Workshops Taught by Sean Blanck

I would like to open this review with thanks to Tatika of Tatika's Treasures for sponsoring some AWESOME workshops on Saturday, January 17th. I had the wonderful opportunity to take the Drum Workshops taught by Sean Blanck ,director and lead drummer for Wind and Fingers,

For those of you who missed the Workshop sponsored by Tatika of Tatika's treasuresyou really missed an awesome workshops. Although I am on a long sabatical from dancing, I did peek in on the Astryd Workshops and there were really awesome moves and energy in that room.

I attended both the Beginner and Advanced Drum workshops. I came away with techniques and infomation that will make me a more polished drummer and teacher. Every drummer needs to attend one of Seans workshops when the opportunity comes up or schedule a private lesson with him.

The Beginner Workshop covered proper hand positions, how to get a crisp sound from your drum and introduced some basic rhythms and their variations. Of course there were handouts so you had something to practice with when you are at home.

In the advanced workshop Sean covered keeping your sound clean, variations of rhythms and flourishes to make a rhythm interesting. He also covered performing with dancers and how to create your drum solo. There were discussions on current trends in drumming and playing with a band. Sean also covered cultural drumming styles and drumming in other countries. Especially impressive was Seans interaction with each individual student and what they hoped to come away with. He made sure they left with what they wanted to learn.

Hi Everyone!

I am so pleased to announce that I will be vending at Kismet this weekend.
I am launching my new line of treats called Yelibelly Chocolates - this is another hobby I have been studying that is growing into a small business!

Some of my friends in the community have already tested and sampled my products at Tribal Alchemy, my classes and regular NTMEDA meetings.

I will be selling boxes from two different lines or collections I have developed. I will also have a few samples on hand just to tempt you into more! All chocolates are handmade by me in my small confectionary kitchen. Each chocolate has a creamy ganache center that is infused with a different flavor. All flavors are natural and my chocolates are made without nuts.

If you are ready to try something new and delicious, here is a sample of what I will be bringing this weekend:

Fort Worth Kismet FINALLY

Both the April FW kismet and the June Kismet are online at Image Fusion Studio.

We are sorry for the delays ...
Each shot required individual attention due to the challenging lighting at the venue.
(That's close to 900 images that had to be manipulated)

Hopefully, in the future we can make adjustments on site to alleviate the issues !

Image Fusion House cleaning

The directory structure at the Image fusion site for Kismet was getting a little out of control .
(We have been shooting Kismet Events since November 2005 so there are a lot of events and a lot of images Now more that 12,000 of Kismet alone ! )

To make navigation a little easier I have separated the Kismet shows by year for Dallas . Fort Worth now has its own directory structure.

I hope that this makes it easier to find images from past shows

Also the search function will return images for a performer. This is still being updated but we are well on the way ...
If we don't have your name in search please forward a image number and performer's name to photos@imagefusionstudio.net and we will update the database

Al Amir Lebanese Restaurant on Greenville is now offering FREE bellydance lessons....starting June 4th

Join us at Al Amir Greenville on Wednesday nights starting June 4th for FREE bellydance lessons. Instruction will be provided by Yeli, Tamra Henna and Sa'diyya, all house dancers at Al Amir and dance instructors in the DFW area.

This is a great opportunity to bring a friend or relative out that is interested in bellydance but not ready to take the leap to classes yet. This is also a great night out for anyone with a little shimmy in their hips! We will offer 45 minute to 1 hour lessons that will change each week. We will start with the basics and see what happens! Since each week is something different so you can jump in at anytime. It's like a bellydance buffet!

Classes will begin at 8:30 in the club area of Al Amir and we will provide hip scarves for everyone until they are gone. Everyone will have the opportunity to practice what they have learned as we open up the dance floor to everyone while the DJ spins some great music.

After the classes, everyone is invited to stick around and enjoy a professional performance by one of our dancers.

No purchase is necessary to join the class or watch the performance but you may want to relax with a hookah in the club or try the Chicken Shwarma and the yummy hummus!

This week Yeli will be starting us off with lessons on June 4th at 8:30pm. The performance will actually take place BEFORE the class this time. Show time around 8pm. So come early for the performance and stay for the class!

DfW community question!

Hey all,
We are trying to comtemplate the remainder of the 2008 Kismet FtW location. At our last location we had it at the Bob Duncan Center in Arlington vs. our regular gig at Arts 5th avenue in Fort Worth.
FOr those that have been to both or know about them which do you prefer?
Below are some pros and cons of each:
Bob Duncan center
pro - raised stage
pro - better parking
pro - nice facility
con - in Arlington (for FtW dancers)
con - ceiling is low
con - stage entrance only through the middle of the crowd
Arts 5th
pro - close to "home"
pro - larger stage
pro - stage entrance from the side or through the middle
con - parking minimal
con - stage not raised
THere are some other pros and cons from a business standpoint but given that those are equal which do you as a dancer prefer?!
Trying to make our FtW venue better for you all! :-)

A change in venue just for this one time due to unavailability of the Fifth Avenue Arts location. This hasn't been put on the main Kismetdance.org page, but it should be up there very soon.

So you'll have to drive a little further east from FW . . . or not so far if you are coming from Dallas.

What a great show!

Those of you who didn't make it, boy did you miss out! What a great show last night!!! My personal favorite was Rai-Rai and Renee. What a wnoderful piece you guys did! I loved it! You were so in synch with each other and it was really nice to watch.

Dancing Minds and Bodies was truly amazing. What a great piece of art. I was held transfixed as I know the others around me were too. It's so great to see the evolution of Kismet from all Middle Eastern dance to now having other dance forms coming as well. Makes me feel like belly dance is finally becoming more widely accepted as the art form it is!

Seeing Obi and Nari together made me get all nostaligic because I remember seeing them when they first started together some time ago. Always nice to see you ladies!!!

There were countless other great acts. If ya'll missed this show you really missed out!

7pm Show Time, Doors Open 6:30
$10 cover

Raks Halim will be our guest troupe performers as well as 15 great acts of international dance entertainment from student performers to top professionals from the DFW area. Show up early because we will have live music both before the show and at intermission. Make sure to bring extra cash and/or your checkbook so that you can do a little shopping while you're jamming to the music! We have raffle items to give away, and 4 Wench Productions will be providing concessions up in the balcony.

Vendors this month include:
Chris' Creative Designs is back and you can visit her down on the floor this time
Tribal Evolution will be on the floor as well
Up in the balcony, make sure to visit Aminah's Charms
4 Wench Productions will also be selling raffle tickets to be a tribal dancer for a day
The Kismet merchandise table, along with the DVDs from the previous shows, will be up in the balcony this month

SATURDAY 10:00a WORKSHOP: "UNMATA au naturel"
This multi-level workshop will outline two tribal fusion combinations emphasizing technique and isolation. The first
combination will incorporate the building blocks of UNMATA's modern bellydance style. The second combination will focus primarily on the Hula Fusion nuance.Each movement will be outlined within a tribal cueing system so that it may be added to any troupe's choreography or tribal vocabulary. Amy will describe and drill each individual movement,then fasten them together into an accessible tribal combo that will be practiced in useful group and duet formations.
This workshop will be fun, fast, and furious. UNMATA believes in beat-your-butt technical practice, so bring water and come prepared to sweat.

This intense workshop focuses on fast! Amy will lay down the stylistic foundation and technical breakdown for UNMATA's awe-inspiring omis, ferocious shimmies, and bad-ass body pops.Each movement will include "transition-training" so it can be used alone or linked with other movements to create a short choreography. UNMATA is known for beat-your-butt drilling and technical obsession, so bring lots of water and come prepared to sweat!

Amy's Art of Overlay is at the heart of this intermediate toadvanced bellydance workshop aimed to add expressive layers and distinction to your dance style. Although controlled simultaneous movement is a complex idea, this class provides a simple approach certain to bring impressive results.Beginning with a thorough breakdown of basic isolation technique, Amy will expand such elements as core strength and relaxed tension, and then demonstrate helpful exercises that are necessary to develop an awareness needed to isolate key muscle groups. Then she will teach and drill an isolation combo that incorporates the artistic flare unique to Amy Sigil and UNMATA.

Because this class is designed for the intermediate to advanced dancer, a sufficient understanding of balance and timing is prerequisite.

IMPORTANT - Please read if you are planning on attending the NTMEDA workshop this weekend

In the words of Tribe – DONUT Freak Out!

We have encountered a small hiccup in our plans for this weekend’s workshop, but our NTMEDA board has dutifully fixed the problem!

There was a conflict (double booking) that was just realized by the Hurst Rec. Center. We have found an alternate location that may be more central for many of our members.

The times of the workshops are NOT changing, the classes offered are NOT changing and the instructors are NOT changing. The only thing that is changing is the venue.

All activities will now be located at the Grapevine Community Activities Center (1175 Municipal Way in grapevine). This location is just off of Main Street, directly behind the Grapevine Convention Center (where Yaa Halla Y'all is held). Same side of the road, same color brick, just a few buildings north of the Convention Center.

You can zoom in and out from here to find your way. It is located just off of 114 and 121 – SUPER convenient from many areas!

You can still register online until Saturday night. You may want to consider registering online, as some classes are filling up!

New Gallery tryout

I am in the process of changing the gallery software that I use.

I have heard the complaints about the current one and have been looking for a solution that is
1) easy to navigate and to find YOUR images (after all there are over 5500 Kismet images alone on the site)
2) fast
3) allows you to take a better look at the images
4) a MUCH better ordering system.

I think that I have found something

I would like y'all to take a look at the new system and tell me what you think

It is not fully configured yet as I am still learning the ins and outs of the application.

One thing to note ... when the page opens click on view gallery on the lower left hand site to open the navigation window.
ALSO the search function is there and many dancer names are already included in the search so if you were in the last two Kismet shows try searching for images (click on the search button) by your name.

Please leave me feedback on what you think. If this looks good I will bring on line the full version.

Hey, I noticed on another tribe that the date for the March Kismet in Dallas was posted as March 23...March 23 is a Sunday..The show is on March 22, which is a Saturday, right?
Just checking 'cuz those who know me well know I get confused easily.

Board Position Available

Carla, our fabulous Secretary, is moving in May- we are very sad to see her go, but proud of the choices she is making and wish her the very best in her endeavors.
As such, Kismet is looking for applicants for the Secretarial position. This person will work with the Dallas board, and will need to be able to attend the Dallas Events.

Please email me with any questions about the position or letters of interest in the position. The deadline for letters of interest is Feb. 29th.

Secretary:

*Takes notes from meeting, posts them to all board members. In charge of providing all non-advertising written materials. Dancer check in cards, waivers, dancer etiquette sheets- etc etc

Goals: to have notes from meeting posted to all board members with in 5 days.

Dancer Check In:

*Pre Event: answers questions/requested from performers about performances,
* Event: set up and tear down of dancer dressing rooms, ice down water, etc. checks in dancers, arranges dancer line up, works with DJ to insure CD return to performers.

Goals: to have line up done 10 min.s before the hour

Vendors:

*Pre Event: Coordinates with vendors, doing all possible to insure vendor spots are all filled and paid for in advance when ever possible
*Event: Vendor liaison, assists vendors with where they will be, polices to make sure all assistants have paid admittance fee.

Goals: to have all vendor spots filled for each event.

Other duties as assigned.

Kismet Dallas Update

We had a really outstanding show this last Saturday and I would like to thank our dancers, audience, and vendors for coming out!
