Hey all,
We are trying to comtemplate the remainder of the 2008 Kismet FtW location. At our last location we had it at the Bob Duncan Center in Arlington vs. our regular gig at Arts 5th avenue in Fort Worth.
FOr those that have been to both or know about them which do you prefer?
Below are some pros and cons of each:
Bob Duncan center
pro - raised stage
pro - better parking
pro - nice facility
con - in Arlington (for FtW dancers)
con - ceiling is low
con - stage entrance only through the middle of the crowd
Arts 5th
pro - close to "home"
pro - larger stage
pro - stage entrance from the side or through the middle
con - parking minimal
con - stage not raised
THere are some other pros and cons from a business standpoint but given that those are equal which do you as a dancer prefer?!
Trying to make our FtW venue better for you all! :-)
xoxo,

Re: DfW community question!
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 2:07 PMI loved the bob duncan center I am 5'7 and did veil i had no problem with the low ceiling. I like the raised stage and for once i got to see the dancers from head to feet. I do believe we could enter the stage from the side if we went out the side door to the stage. -

Re: DfW community question!
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 2:10 PMI would probably be more likey to go to Arlington from Dallas than all the way to Fort Worth. I know, selfish!
I personally like a raised stage where if they choose to do floorwork I won't miss them. Or just see their head bobbing up and down like they are doing the charlie tuna. so if it's raised enough to see someoen do floor work from just about anywhere, I would prefer Bob Duncan.

Re: DfW community question!
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 11:52 PMOk, I don't live there and I haven't been to either of these places, so discount me if you want.
Isn't the point of having a Fort Worth Kismet having a venue that is more convenient for the westside?
From where I live in Virginia, I HATE driving to DC and I go to almost anything that is in my county, sometimes for the sheer ability to attend a BD event that doesn't require me to spend $$$ on gas and tolls and get in awful traffic. (I know that Arlington is Tarrant and that the traffic doesn't compare to Dallas, so that is a big improvement).
Also, if I happen to be "home", I'd rather drive to a location in Fort Worth. :)
But a raised stage is nice and limited parking is BAD!
...now back to people who actually live in TX! -

Re: DfW community question!
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 6:05 AMHa yes that is one of my main concerns! It IS Kismet "Fort Worth"! It wouldn't be a permanant thing, only until we can find a venue on the west side that meets our needs. So this would only be for the next 1 -2 shows! :-) -

Re: DfW community question!
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 1:13 PMLOL, you know for some of us . . . Arlington is Fort Worth . . . don't shoot me!!!!
And just to make you insane . . . Where I was working at south of the airport (Trinity Blvd and 360) was physically considered FW . . . I think this was done for tax purposes on DFW Airport (don't get me talking about land grabs, etc) . . . but I think that made FW closer than Arlington for me, hehe!!! Remember, I live in Northeast Dallas, so it is a long haul for me to get to south of the airport . . . much less the 25 some odd miles past that to get into southwest FW. With gas prices the way it is, we need to seriously think about carpooling!
"Dallas" Kismet is actually in Carrollton, so maybe you will have to get used to the idea. I would have preferred a more centralized location in Dallas but I think it just gets too expensive to rent a good space. -

Re: DfW community question!
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 1:19 PMI think most North Texans believe anything before DFW airport is Ft Worth (Mid Cities included) and anything AFTER the airport is Dallas...

Re: DfW community question!
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 7:01 PMYes , most would call the line on the side of fort worth. -

Re: DfW community question!
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 7:53 AMWhat's AFTER DFW Airport is Grapevine or Euless. *SNORK* What's BEFORE is Irving, my home town. *DOUBLE SNORK*
I personally like the Art's Theater. It's a pain in the tukus to store our instruments in the audience; and also to bring that gear through the audience. The side door to the Duncan stage was locked last time. We have to share the place with whatever wedding or Quincinera is going on LOUDLY. Yes, parking bites at the Art's Theater, but that's outweighed in my view by the other stuff.
I like the raised stage at Duncan to see the dancers, but that's about the only thing. I like the intimate feeling in the Art's Theater. We can always rent a raised stage if we want to bad enough. The big raised stage makes me feel like I'm at a 5th grade piano recital, sometimes. I just like the feeling that we are all dancing and playing together in someone's living room, and I like that, very much. Other folks might not like it so much.
The distance doesn't matter much to me. From Irving, (or Denton where my mates are from) it's six of one, half a dozen of the other.
And yes, we need to carpool to the Ft.W. Kismet, whereever it is. You east Dallas folks can meet me in Irving, and save half the gas, and chip in a few dollars for mine (I have a 31 mpg car on the freeway), and I can hold 3 more people (two dancers if y'all have a lot of gear).

Re: DfW community question!
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 7:44 AMI personally am partial to Arts 5th Ave... I love the location, the closeness to the audience and it just feels like family there. The room in the back is nice to get ready and wait...and give encouragement to those going on stage... i love it :)

Re: DfW community question!
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 4:35 PMi haven't been to the new space...but I can speak on Arts 5th...and give ya the pros and cons:
pro - back stage dressing room is spacious, room to practice, and destress by talking with other dancers.
pro - intimate feeling of the performance area
pro - supports the arts community (I enjoy the artwork backstage!)
pro - the food the art community brings in is most yummy, and admitedly the alcohol is a nice addition for people that want it.
con - the pole on the side of the stage...I know we have had to take into consideration if we want to deal with it and offset our routine thus running the risk of pushing off the stage on the other side, or just ignore it and know that some people will have an obstructed view
con - the small rise getting on to the stage...if you miss it...it hurts. One of our dancers tripped on that tiny step once and spent the whole routine dancing on a sprained ankle, and was out of commision for weeks after.
con - not a raised stage, I do miss seeing any floor work if I am in the back, or the hip movements of shorter dancers. I compensate by standing in the back... -

Re: DfW community question!
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 8:07 AMOh yea, I forgot about that stinking pole.
Last time I was there, a couple of the, ahem, "less conservative" dancers made it a prop.
*smiles*
The low lights at Duncan are a challenge, but somehow Tehara didn't hang herself with her veil, and Jess didn't knock any loose with her cane. :-P

Wed, April 30, 2008 - 9:25 AMI guess she's gonna have to get a stronger, longer cane, then.
